ABC's "Alias"
| "Alias" could be the best
action/adventure show on network TV today. It's fast-paced, intelligent, and doesn't
descend to quite the same level of "graphic violence" that its closest
competitor, "24", sometimes lowers itself to, in the ever-escalating quest to
push the ratings envelope. "Alias" has a strong ensemble cast, with
well-developed characters that got that way without once hopping into bed
with each other -- pretty amazing in a culture that tells us sex is the
yardstick of every relationship. And while the plots and gadgets are
sometimes a bit far-fetched, the stories are well-written and don't constrain
themselves to tidy, 60-minute, everything's-all-better-now episodes.

Of course, what that means is that you shouldn't jump into the
middle of the series. Both the
first and
second seasons have been released
on DVD now -- probably one of the fastest TV-to-DVD releases yet. Buy or
rent the DVDs and watch "Alias" from the beginning. You'll be glad you
did.
